This day has definitely been a highlight thus far in my photography career. I feel so lucky to have met Jaclyn and Dustin and for being a part of their lives and capturing such intimate moments with them. Raw love, lots of tears and tons of belly laughs! Before I go into the details of the day, I want to share Jaclyn and Dustin’s cute love story!
Back in 2006, Jaclyn applied for a job at a local restaurant where she felt something called her to that job. As the new girl, Jaclyn thought that she had met most of her coworkers in the week of her training until one shift she randomly picked up during the week. As Jaclyn walked up towards the kitchen she locked eyes with a young, good looking guy with Dragon Ball Z spikes and a smile that could stop any girl in their tracks! They followed each other’s gaze and as the world stopped in that moment for them, a loud, “Damn!!” came out of what Jaclyn realized was Dustin’s mouth as she turned around. “Was that for me?!?” as she smiled ear to ear. What the hell just happened?!? After that initial meeting, if you so call it that, Dustin approached Jaclyn with a yellow note ripped out from his server pad. It read: Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, Here is my number ###-###-### why don’t you give me a call too! This note led to a fun-filled 3 month dating period which only led to them being friends for the next 6 years. Dustin’s persistence never wavered in the years they were friends, they clearly recall a phone call where Dustin asked for another chance to date and Jaclyn replied with, “ IN YOUR DREAMS!”… well I guess that dream would definitely come true for him. Fast forward to 2012, a meeting at an iHop at midnight after so many years of not seeing other, they talked endlessly until the sun rose. It was then and there that after hearing how each had grown up and experienced life a bit more, (I mean he was 19 at the time they had met and she… well, let’s just say a bit more mature….) they knew that leaving each other that day would be over for the both of them….wedding bells were ringing in the distance.
Some beautiful words written by Jaclyn on why they chose to elope and create their own unique wedding day:
“This vow exchange was something for us to celebrate in a way that was purely us: adventurous, spontaneous, minimal and somewhat mysterious. Being in the industry and seeing clients stress out, I wanted to be the opposite of that. I wanted to take the day slowly and spend time with my future husband. That day was for us… to be together… and enjoy every moment by each other’s side. Even though we were there beforehand writing each other’s vows the day of, it was still emotional enough–I mean you can’t go wrong when you get to stare at your muse as you write it.. We truly value each moment we have with one another… we aren’t perfect people– we do have our bad days too.. but mostly.. we have come appreciate each and every minute we are given to spend with one another. Making the decision to do this for us was the right thing to do. Follow your gut, your instincts, your heart just like you did with one another.”
I met Jaclyn earlier this year when she attended my first Tofino workshop back in May. Right from the get-go, I knew we would get along great. Her quirky sense of humour mixed with a couple drinks and the bowling alley made for a hilarious night that I will never forget. In a short amount of time I got to know her, I knew she was an incredible person and it made me sad that she lives all the way down in California. I also knew that this her fiance would have to be some special, because that’s exactly what Jaclyn is. Her outward beauty matches her soul, and she is not only an incredible person, but also a very talented passionate photographer. When I first met Dustin, the day before their elopement, it was easy to like him. We were at the floral shop and greeted me with big open arms and I could tell just from his demeanor that he was a genuinely great guy — you can tell a lot from a hug! I was helping them pick out the flowers for the bouquet and boutonniere (I played florist for them, and made them both hehe).
Within a few short minutes of arriving at their cute little Air BnB in downtown Victoria, Fan Tan Alley to be exact, they started writing their vows. They were both getting so emotional that I knew come time to read them to each other, that I would have tears in my eyes too (that still happens to me almost every wedding … I’m such a softie!). After finishing writing their vows, putting on some good jams and opening a tasty bottle of vino, Jaclyn let her beautiful locks down (hair and makeup by the talented Erin Bradley) the two snuggled up for some “vanilla” couples boudoir 🙂 — I also like to call them “snuggle sessions”! Honestly, this is my favourite part about elopements (and also a reason why my husband and I decided to elope as well), is because you literally get to spend the entire day together, get ready together and share all those moments that would otherwise be spent apart.
We packed everything up and headed up the west coast of Vancouver Island, about 2 hours from Victoria, to the beautiful Sombrio Beach. They got ready in the forest and did their first looks (grab the tissues because they are seriously so stinkin cute) then headed out for some portraits before exchanging their handwritten vows. The waves crashed up and the sun was perfect. There was nothing more perfect. Wiping each other’s tears, the two exchanged rings and sealed it with an excited kiss! The rest of the evening was spend having fun and being steamy with each other and finished off the perfect evening with some champagne during the blue hour after the sun went down.
I felt so honoured to not only capture Jaclyn and Dustin’s incredible day, but so lucky to have met them. I knew I will be forever friends with these two and I’m so excited to plan a trip down the coast so they can give my husband and I the grand old tour of the California Coast!
I get very emotionally invested in my couples and days such as this are a strong reminder of why I do what I do. Thank you Jaclyn + Dustin 🙂
